Add Walking To Your Daily Routine
“Regular physical activity is probably as close to a magic bullet as we will come in modern medicine,” Says Dr. JoAnn Manson, chief of preventive medicine at Harvard’s Brigham and Women’s Hospital.
“If everyone, in the U.S. were to walk briskly 30-40 minutes a day, we could cut the incidence of many chronic diseases 30-40%.” Exercise will lower your risk of heart attack, diabetes, stroke, osteoporosis, depression and many kinds of cancer. It will also increase muscle mass and reshape your body. And it is as simple as opening your door and taking a step outside, and then another and another. It’s as simple as walking.
What I like the best about walking is that it is so easy. It doesn’t require any special clothes most of the time, just a good pair of shoes. I think that I need to say this again. It is so easy. Many of us seem to have forgotten that we can walk almost anywhere within a few miles. We don’t always have to drive. Take a look around the next time you go to the trail to run or do a boot camp. So many cars parked everywhere because we DRIVE to go run or workout. Most of us don’t live that far from a place to exercise and could use the walk there as a warm-up.
Another way to think about walking is to imagine that you are in New York City or Washington, DC, or Paris or London. When we visit those cities, we always expect to walk…a lot. I try to think of Austin in the same way. Park somewhere and walk around the Texas State Capitol and the Bullock Museum and the UT Campus and Downtown Austin. I have really enjoyed going to many different parts of Austin and walking a new neighborhood.
We live in a very wonderful town and it is so much fun to get to know some new parts of it. Just take a moment to see if you can add walking to your daily routine, especially if you don’t have time for a scheduled workout at a gym, boot camp, etc. Just one step after another…so easy.
